What to do in an water, gas or sewer emergency situation
In a plumbing emergency, immediately shut off the main water valve (usually near the meter or in the basement/garage) to stop flooding, turn off the electricity if water reaches outlets, and call a plumber. If a gas leak is suspected, evacuate immediately and call emergency services, do not operate switches, and do not try to turn off the gas yourself.
Emergency Water Instructions
- Locate Main Shut-Off: Find the main valve, usually near the water meter, basement, or utility area.
- Turn Off: Turn the valve clockwise or 90 degrees (for lever-style) until it stops.
- Drain Pipes: Open the lowest faucets in the house to drain remaining water.
- Water Heater: Turn off the gas/power to the water heater if it is leaking, then close the cold water supply valve to it.

Emergency Gas Instructions (SMELL GAS/HISSING)
- Evacuate: Get everyone out immediately, including pets.
- No Ignition Sources: Do not turn on lights, use appliances, or use phones inside.
- Shut Off (Only if Safe): Use a wrench to turn the valve on the meter 90 degrees to a perpendicular position.
- Call 911: Call the gas company or 911 from outside the home.
Emergency Sewer/Drainage Instructions
- Stop Water Usage: Immediately stop running water, showering, or using the washing machine to prevent more sewage from backing up.
- Identify Backup: If toilets or floor drains bubble, it is a main sewer line clog.
- Ventilate: Open windows to allow foul odors to escape.
- Avoid Contamination: Do not walk through sewage, as it can contain bacteria. Clean and sanitize all affected areas thoroughly once fixed.
- Do Not Use Drain Cleaners: Chemicals can damage pipes and may not fix the issue.
